VE Day 80
As part of our commemorations for VE Day 80 (Victory in Europe Day), we will be taking the opportunity to help the children understand the significance of this important moment in history, which marked the end of World War II in Europe on 8th May 1945.
At Bishop Ridley C of E Primary School, we have signed up to VE Mail, which is a national letter exchange connecting children with veterans, preserving their stories and offering a meaningful way to say thank you and honour the courage and sacrifice of WWII veterans.
We have been lucky enough to receive letters from two veterans:
Tom Jones – 103 years old (Infants)
Jean Rees – 101 years old (Juniors)
To honour those who served, we are inviting the children to write a letter of response to one of these veterans. This is a chance for them to show appreciation, learn about the past, and reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of those who contributed to the war effort.
Letters can include:
- A thank you to the veteran for their service
- Questions about their experiences during the war (if appropriate)
- Thoughts or feelings about what VE Day means today
- A drawing or decoration to accompany the letter (optional)
Please encourage your child to take part - this is a meaningful way to connect younger generations with our history in a personal and respectful manner.
We kindly ask that letters be returned to school by Friday 16th May 2025. We will be choosing a winning entry from each class to post to the veterans.
