The HAKA
WAR DANCE
A couple of years ago I taught a Year 6 class how to perform the Ka Mate HAKA. Not only did they learn how to perform the Haka but they also learnt about the culture and history of the Mauri people of New Zealand. We learnt why the Haka is still performed today at large sporting and ceremonial events. Please look at the PowerPoint below where you will find some info on what The Haka means to New Zealanders, why they do it and a video of the All Blacks rugby team performing it at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
For the children to learn how to perform The Haka please use the video of the All Blacks rugby team performing it at the World Cup. Break it down into stages/time sections and count how many times you perform an action, which will then lead you into the next part of the WAR DANCE and hopefully help you learn the full routine.
I look forward to seeing how far the children have come when we come back to school and perform the WAR DANCE on our first week back together.
