Humility
At Bishop Ridley, humility is an important part of our vision: One Community, Learning & Growing Together, Sharing the Love of God. Humility is not about putting ourselves down, but about remembering that each of us is valued by God, and that we grow when we listen, learn and serve others.
How We Practise Humility
At Bishop Ridley, humility looks like:
Listening to others’ ideas and respecting their point of view.
Celebrating one another’s gifts without boasting about our own.
Saying sorry when we are wrong and being ready to learn from our mistakes.
Remembering that we are all part of God’s family, and no one is more important than anyone else. Everyone is unique and everyone is important.
Why Humility Matters
It helps us to grow as learners, because we are open to feedback and new ideas.
It strengthens friendships and community, because we value others as much as ourselves.
It reflects the example of Jesus, who leads by serving.
It teaches us that together, as one community, we can achieve more than we ever could alone.
By living with humility, we create a school where everyone is encouraged, valued and supported to become the person God has called them to be.
What The Bible Teaches Us About Humility
Jesus himself showed the greatest humility. Though he was God’s Son, he lived a life of service and taught his disciples to do the same:
“For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” — Luke 14:11
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: who, being in very nature God… humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross.” — Philippians 2:5, 8
These verses remind us that humility means putting others first and recognising that true greatness is found in service, not in seeking power or praise.
